Director-actor Sasikumar has always been a trend setter in Kollywood. Whether in his pathbreaking Subramaniapuram or the racy Naadodigal, he has always proved that a good script is more important than a big star cast. The specialty of Sasikumar is his eye for detail and the inspiring screenplay. With Easan, Sasikumar is back in his favourite area: direction. The interesting thing about Easan? Its huge star cast. There is no particular hero or heroine in the film; all are just characters.
What is it about?
Easan is about a rich spoilt brat Chezhian (Vaibhav), his corrupt politician dad Deivanayagam (AL. Azhagappan) and an honest police officer ACP Sangaiya (Samuthirakani).
The film also tells the story of Reshma (Aparna), only daughter of a big industrialist in Bangalore, Poorni (Abhinaya), a village girl who aspires to become a fashion designer and another mysterious character.

Aparna

THE PLOT
The film opens with the beautifully shot pub song 'Inda Iravu Daan Pogude' (Sukhwinder Singh's voice is a treat). Suddenly, a girl (on a two wheeler) is being chased by a group of drunken boys at night, which ends in an accident; the girl dies on the spot. The police take the boys into custody and ACP Sangaiya (Samuthirakani) files an FIR against them. Now Chezhian (Vaibhav), only son of minister Deivanayagam (AL. Azhagappan) comes to their rescue. ACP Sangaiya is helpless, but has to obey the orders of his higher authorities.
Chezhian comes across Reshma (Aparna) and it is love at first sight for him. When Chezhian rescues Reshma from a rave party raid, she is also smitten by him. But there is a twist in the tale. Chezhian gets kidnapped suddenly, ACP Sangaiya starts his investigation, which is followed by some new twists and a gruesome flashback! Who kidnapped Chezhian? Why? Easan has the answers! Remember, apart from all these people, there is one mysterious character in the film, in fact a new entrant to Kollywood!
THE PERFOMANCES
Its Samuthirakani all the way: he looks fit and perfect for the role of a cop. Azhagappan, Namo Narayana and Blessy have given brilliant performances. Vaibhav, Abhinaya (she plays the role of a dumb village girl), the mystery man (we don't want to reveal the character, as it spoils the entire plot of the film) and Aparna are not far behind either. Sasikumar's knack of choosing the perfect star cast is definitely an asset. He did it in Subramaniapuram and now again in Easan. Interestingly, there are no lead pairs in Easan; it's only characters and not even a single talent is wasted.
The Story
Sasikumar's casting is 100% perfect. Audiences might compare Easan with the director’s debut and will find that the story and screenplay lack the spark of Subramaniyapuram. The film is basically about the modern lifestyle and Chennai city's night life.
Interestingly, whatever is lost in the first half is gained in the second  half, which is an edge-of-the-seat thriller. The second half also has some interesting and unexpected twists, which includes Abhinaya's village flashback, the introduction of the mystery man, Samuthirakani's racy and smart investigation. In Tamil, Lord Shiva is also referred as Easan and even in this film, there is a mysterious character which destroys evil!
The Techniques
James Vasanthan's music is one of the biggest highlights of the film and the song 'Inda Iravu Daan Pogude' stands out. He has mixed a western touch in local music which is interesting. S.R. Kathiir's camerawork is brilliant; both the Chennai night life and village sequences have been shot beautifully. The opening discotheque song is a treat to watch. However, editing by Ramesh could have been better as many scenes in the first half are very lengthy and clichéd.
THE VERDICT
Erase Subramaniapuram from your mind, Easan tells the tale of the dark urban lifestyle with some interesting twists.
